LEGO Ideas 40896 The X-Files: Scully’s Lab is a small 221-piece set, but it is clearly designed to do one very specific job: expand the world created by LEGO Ideas 21369 The X-Files.

Instead of trying to recreate another large episode location, this set focuses on Dana Scully’s laboratory environment at the FBI National Academy.

That makes 40896 less of a standalone headline model and more of a carefully targeted companion piece for collectors who want their X-Files display to feel more complete.

What Makes LEGO 40896 Different?

The interesting thing about 40896 is that it does not try to compete with the main X-Files set.

Instead, it fills a very different role.

The larger LEGO Ideas 21369 set is the centerpiece. Scully’s Lab is the kind of side location that helps the collection feel more like a world rather than a single display.

For me, that is exactly what a good companion set should do.

A Small Set With a Very Clear Identity

Some small promotional LEGO sets can feel generic because they reuse familiar furniture or scenery.

Scully’s Lab avoids that problem by having a very specific purpose.

The examination table, overhead lamp, equipment cart, cupboards and sink immediately communicate a medical and investigative setting.

There is no need for a large sign or complicated exterior. The laboratory equipment tells the story.

Dana Scully Is the Main Attraction

For many X-Files collectors, the Dana Scully minifigure may be the most important part of the set.

Her white coat and medical clothing make this version feel distinct from a standard field-agent appearance.

The double-sided head is also a useful touch because the protective goggles make sense specifically in the laboratory environment.

That means the minifigure is not simply included because the set needed a character. She is dressed for the scene itself.

Why the Laboratory Setting Works

The X-Files is not only about dark rooms, flashlights and paranormal investigations.

A major part of the series comes from the contrast between Mulder’s intuition and Scully’s scientific approach.

A lab-focused set therefore represents something important about Scully as a character.

That makes this location more meaningful than a random office or corridor expansion.

The Examination Table Creates the Scene

The examination table is the central object in the lab.

It immediately gives the minifigure something to interact with and creates the possibility of forensic or medical investigation scenes.

The overhead lamp reinforces that purpose and visually frames the center of the build.

Even though the room is small, those two elements make the scene readable almost instantly.

Small Background Details Matter

The cupboards, cart and sink may not sound exciting individually, but they are exactly the kind of elements that make a miniature room believable.

Without them, the set would be little more than a table and a minifigure.

With them, the build begins to feel like an actual workplace rather than a collection of unrelated accessories.

How Well Does It Complement LEGO Ideas 21369?

This is where I think 40896 has its strongest purpose.

The main LEGO Ideas 21369 The X-Files set gives collectors the larger display and major visual identity of the license.

Scully’s Lab adds another recognizable environment without demanding much extra shelf space.

Placed nearby, the two models can represent two different sides of the series: field investigations and scientific analysis.

That is a much stronger combination than simply adding another generic room to the main set.

Standalone Set or Expansion?

You can display 40896 on its own, but I think it makes significantly more sense as an expansion.

By itself, the build is very compact and deliberately focused.

Next to a larger X-Files collection, however, the lab gains context and becomes part of a broader display.

That difference is important when deciding whether the set offers enough value for you.

What I Like Most About LEGO 40896

My favorite aspect is how efficiently the set communicates its theme.

There are only 221 pieces, yet the scene immediately looks like Scully’s working environment.

The laboratory clothing, examination table and equipment all reinforce the same idea.

Nothing feels particularly random or included only to increase the piece count.

Possible Downsides

The biggest drawback is obvious: this is a very small model.

Builders looking for a long construction experience will probably finish it quickly.

There is also only one minifigure, which limits standalone storytelling compared with larger licensed sets.

And because the set is so closely tied to The X-Files, it has relatively little appeal for people who are not already fans of the series.

This is a specialist collector set rather than a broad LEGO playset.

Who Is LEGO 40896 Best For?

I think this set is best suited to adult X-Files fans who already own or plan to own LEGO Ideas 21369.

It should also appeal to minifigure collectors who want a lab-specific Dana Scully variant.

Fans of compact desk displays may appreciate it too, because the footprint is small enough to fit almost anywhere.

For younger builders looking for lots of play features, vehicles or characters, there are stronger choices elsewhere.

Display Value vs Play Value

This is primarily a display and collection expansion.

The scene does offer some role-play potential, but the limited size and single minifigure make it clear that the model is intended to support a larger X-Files collection.

Its strongest display feature is probably the recognizable lab setup combined with Scully in her medical outfit.

Why Companion Sets Like This Can Work

Large licensed LEGO sets usually focus on the most famous locations and characters.

That means smaller but important environments are often left out.

Companion sets can solve that problem without dramatically increasing the price or footprint of the main model.

Scully’s Lab is a good example because it expands the story instead of simply repeating something already included in 21369.

Is the GWP Format a Strength or Weakness?

As a promotional set, 40896 is naturally more specialized than a normal retail release.

That can increase its appeal to collectors, but it can also make availability more complicated later.

From a design perspective, though, the promotional format suits the model well.

The lab is exactly the kind of compact bonus build that complements a larger premium set without competing with it.

LEGO 40896 Size

The finished laboratory measures approximately 8 cm high, 11 cm wide and 9 cm deep.

That compact size is one of the practical strengths of the model.

It can sit beside the main X-Files set without requiring a major reorganization of a shelf or display cabinet.

My Take on LEGO Ideas 40896

Based on the official images and specifications, LEGO 40896 looks like a small set that understands exactly what it is supposed to do.

It is not trying to deliver a huge build, lots of minifigures or spectacular action features.

Instead, it adds one more recognizable piece of The X-Files world and gives Dana Scully a setting that reflects her scientific side.

The biggest limitation is that the set depends heavily on context. On its own, the model may feel too small for some collectors.

Combined with LEGO Ideas 21369, however, it becomes much more interesting.

For me, that makes Scully’s Lab a classic companion set: modest by itself, but much more valuable when it completes a larger display.
