The new LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31388 Wild Animals: Family of Koalas is a surprisingly ambitious animal set with 1,536 pieces and three completely different wildlife scenes hidden inside the same box.

The main build is a koala with its baby sitting in a eucalyptus tree, but the same bricks can also become a kangaroo with a joey or a pair of sea turtles swimming through an underwater habitat.

What makes this set especially interesting is that the three builds are not simply variations of the same animal. They move from treetops to the Australian outback and finally underwater, giving each rebuild a completely different visual identity.

What Makes LEGO 31388 Different?

The biggest strength of this set is the amount of transformation between the three models.

Some Creator 3-in-1 sets rebuild one animal into two closely related alternatives. LEGO 31388 goes much further.

A tree-climbing koala, jumping kangaroo and swimming sea turtle require completely different body structures, environments and poses.

That makes the rebuilding process feel more meaningful because each version asks the bricks to do something new.

The Koala Family Is the Main Attraction

The headline build features a large koala with its baby sitting among the branches of a eucalyptus tree.

Based on the official images, this is clearly the most elaborate and display-focused option in the box.

The height of more than 31 cm gives the scene real presence, while the vertical tree structure makes the model feel larger without requiring an enormous shelf footprint.

The baby koala also changes the character of the display. Instead of a single animal sculpture, the model becomes a family scene.

The Eucalyptus Tree Is More Than a Stand

The tree plays an important role in making the koala build feel complete.

Koalas are strongly associated with eucalyptus trees, so placing the animals among branches immediately gives the model environmental context.

The foliage also adds more color and breaks up the large grey animal shapes.

Without the habitat, the koalas could look more like isolated brick-built figures. With it, they become part of a miniature wildlife display.

Butterflies Add Small but Useful Details

The three colorful butterflies are tiny compared with the main animals, but they help make the scene feel alive.

They also introduce bright accent colors into a build dominated by natural grey, brown and green tones.

Details like these matter more in display models than they initially appear because they encourage the eye to explore the scene rather than focus only on the central animal.

The Kangaroo Build Changes the Entire Silhouette

The second option rebuilds the set into a kangaroo with a joey.

This is where the flexibility of the Creator concept becomes especially impressive.

The bulky, tree-hugging proportions of a koala are replaced by the powerful rear legs, long tail and upright stance associated with a kangaroo.

That creates a very different display shape and should make the second construction feel substantially different from the first.

The Joey Gives the Kangaroo Scene More Personality

Like the baby koala, the joey prevents the model from feeling like a single-animal sculpture.

The parent-and-young theme also connects the three builds together even though the species change.

That is a clever design choice because it gives the set a consistent identity: this is not just Australian wildlife, but wildlife families.

Parrots Bring Extra Color to the Outback Scene

The kangaroo version includes two colorful parrots and a rocky habitat with plants.

These smaller builds are useful because they visually separate the kangaroo scene from the eucalyptus environment used by the koalas.

They also make the alternative model feel planned rather than simply being a second animal assembled from whatever bricks remained available.

The Sea Turtle Build Is the Biggest Transformation

The third version may be the most surprising because it takes the entire set underwater.

The same bricks become a large sea turtle and its baby, surrounded by coral and aquatic plants.

This changes not only the animals but the entire environment.

For me, that makes the turtle option especially valuable as an alternative build. It is visually far removed from the koala scene, which is exactly what I want from a large Creator 3-in-1 set.

Poseable Flippers Make Sense for the Turtle

The sea turtles feature movable flippers, allowing them to be positioned as if they are swimming.

That is a simple feature, but it matters because sea animals can easily look static when displayed on a flat base.

Changing the angle of the flippers helps create movement and gives owners some freedom to personalize the underwater scene.

Which of the Three Models Is Best?

For display, I think the koala family is the strongest build.

The combination of two animals, eucalyptus tree and butterflies creates the most complete vertical composition.

The kangaroo version is probably the most unmistakably Australian, while the sea turtles offer the biggest visual change from the main model.

That means each build has a different reason to exist, which is exactly what makes a Creator 3-in-1 set worth rebuilding.

1,536 Pieces Make This a Serious Creator Set

This is not a tiny 3-in-1 model designed for a quick afternoon build.

With more than 1,500 pieces, LEGO 31388 has enough scale to create detailed animal bodies and substantial environments around them.

That should also make rebuilding more significant. Taking one version apart and constructing another becomes a proper second building project rather than a brief experiment.

Why the Family Theme Works So Well

One of the cleverest aspects of LEGO 31388 is that every option includes an adult animal and a baby.

That gives all three builds an emotional connection without forcing them to share the same species or environment.

It also creates more storytelling possibilities. The smaller animal can follow, climb, swim or interact with the parent rather than simply serving as decoration.

What I Like Most About LEGO 31388

The biggest strength is the variety between the three wildlife scenes.

LEGO could easily have offered three tree-dwelling animals or three Australian mammals. Instead, the set moves from a tree to rocky terrain and then underwater.

That makes each rebuild feel like a new set.

I also like the inclusion of the baby animals. They add personality and help the models feel less like static museum sculptures.

Possible Downsides

The biggest drawback is familiar to anyone who collects Creator 3-in-1 sets: only one animal family can be built at a time.

And in this case, that compromise may be particularly difficult because all three scenes look substantial enough to display.

If you love the koalas and kangaroos equally, switching between them means dismantling a build containing well over a thousand pieces.

That may discourage some owners from ever trying the alternative instructions.

The set also takes a stylized approach to the animals rather than attempting perfect anatomical realism, which may matter to collectors looking for highly accurate wildlife sculptures.

Would It Be Worth Buying More Than One?

For most builders, probably not. One set already provides a substantial amount of building.

But from a display perspective, I can understand why some wildlife fans might be tempted.

The koalas, kangaroos and turtles would create a surprisingly varied nature collection if displayed together.

That also highlights one of the strange strengths of this set: the alternatives are good enough that dismantling one to build another may be harder than expected.

Display Value

The main koala scene is clearly designed with display in mind.

The tree creates height, the adult koala provides the focal point, and the baby plus butterflies add smaller details around it.

Natural colors should also make the model easier to integrate into a room than some of LEGO's brighter vehicle or fantasy sets.

It could work particularly well alongside LEGO Botanicals or other brick-built animal models.

Play Value

Despite the size, this is not purely a static adult display set.

The movable heads, mouths, legs and flippers allow the animals to be repositioned, while the baby animals naturally encourage small stories and interactions.

Younger builders can therefore use the models as characters rather than treating them only as sculptures.

The habitats add another layer because the action has an actual environment rather than taking place on an empty table.

Play vs Display: Which Side Wins?

I would put LEGO 31388 slightly more on the display side.

The piece count, size and complete habitat scenes suggest that the models are designed to look impressive after construction.

However, the articulation and parent-and-baby format prevent the set from becoming purely decorative.

That balance should make it appealing across a wider age range than a static wildlife sculpture.

How Does It Compare With LEGO Creator 31386 Majestic Lion?

Both sets explore large brick-built animals, but they approach the 3-in-1 idea differently.

LEGO 31386 stays within one animal family, offering a male lion, lioness or two cubs.

LEGO 31388 provides much greater environmental and species variety, moving between koalas, kangaroos and sea turtles.

If you prefer one coherent animal theme, the lion set may feel more focused. If you want three dramatically different builds, 31388 has the advantage.

Who Is LEGO 31388 Best For?

This set should appeal especially to animal lovers, nature fans and builders who enjoy large Creator 3-in-1 projects.

It also looks particularly suitable for someone who enjoys rebuilding rather than treating LEGO instructions as a one-time experience.

The family theme could also make it a strong shared building project for parents and children.

Collectors who want a single permanent model and have no intention of rebuilding may still enjoy the koala display, but they will naturally get less value from the 3-in-1 concept.

Build Together Could Be Useful Here

The LEGO Builder app supports the Build Together feature for this set.

For a 1,536-piece model, that makes more sense than it would on a very small Creator set.

Sharing sections of the construction between multiple builders could make 31388 a good family project rather than one long solo build.

LEGO 31388 Size

The main koala display stands over 31 cm high.

That gives the model serious visual presence while making use of vertical space instead of spreading the entire build across a huge base.

It is still worth checking shelf height before building because the eucalyptus tree makes this noticeably taller than many standard LEGO Creator animals.

My Take on LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31388

Based on the official images and specifications, LEGO Creator 31388 looks like one of the most ambitious animal-based Creator 3-in-1 sets.

The koala family is likely to be the model most owners keep on display, but the kangaroo and sea turtle alternatives are substantial enough that they do not feel like secondary afterthoughts.

The biggest strength is diversity. One box can produce a treetop scene, an outback scene or an underwater scene.

The biggest weakness is that this diversity comes with a painful choice: you cannot keep all three.

For builders willing to dismantle and rebuild, that is exactly what makes the set valuable. For collectors who hate taking finished models apart, the 3-in-1 concept may feel more theoretical than practical.

For me, the koala family is the strongest display, but the sea turtles are the alternative build that would tempt me most to dismantle it.
