The new LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31387 Iconic Pirate Ship feels like a love letter to classic LEGO pirate adventures, but it does something more interesting than simply recreating an old-fashioned sailing ship.

With 1,074 pieces, the set can be rebuilt into three very different pirate-themed creations: a large sailing ship, a buccaneer castle or two smaller pirate ships.

Based on the official images and specifications, the main model is clearly the star, but the alternative builds are substantial enough that this looks like one of those Creator 3-in-1 sets where rebuilding may actually be worth the effort.

What Makes LEGO 31387 Different?

Pirates are one of those LEGO themes that immediately generate stories.

You do not need a complicated license or movie plot. A ship, treasure, cannons and a few pirates are enough to create an adventure.

LEGO 31387 builds on that simplicity but adds the flexibility of the Creator 3-in-1 format.

Instead of deciding whether you want a ship, fort or naval battle, the same bricks can become all three.

The Pirate Ship Is Clearly the Main Event

The headline model is the large pirate ship, and it looks like the version most builders will probably keep assembled for the longest time.

At around 39 cm long and 30 cm high, it has enough scale to look substantial on a shelf without becoming an enormous collector model.

The tall masts, sails and raised stern give the ship a strong silhouette, while the smaller details make it feel like a working pirate vessel rather than a decorative shell.

Adjustable Sails Make the Display More Dynamic

The adjustable sails are an important feature because they change the overall shape of the ship.

A sailing vessel can look surprisingly static if every element is permanently fixed in one position.

Here, changing the angle of the sails helps create the impression that the ship is catching the wind or preparing for battle.

It is a simple form of articulation, but it matters visually.

The Anchor Adds a Classic Ship Function

The movable anchor is another familiar pirate-ship feature that helps the model feel more complete.

It may not be the most technically complex mechanism in LEGO history, but functions like this are useful because they reinforce what the model is supposed to represent.

The ship is not only shaped like a pirate vessel. It includes some of the features children expect a pirate vessel to have.

Two Cannons Bring the Battle Element

A pirate ship without cannons would feel strangely peaceful, so the inclusion of two cannons is almost essential.

They give the model a natural play feature and make it easy to create battles with other LEGO ships.

The third 3-in-1 configuration makes that idea even more interesting because it provides two smaller vessels that can actually fight each other.

The Captain's Cabin Adds Interior Detail

The captain's cabin helps separate 31387 from very simple ship models that focus entirely on the exterior.

It gives the captain a proper place within the ship and creates another location for stories involving maps, treasure or secret plans.

I like this kind of detail because it makes the model useful even when the ship is not actively involved in a battle.

There Is Treasure Hidden Below Deck

The hidden treasure compartment is exactly the kind of feature a pirate set should have.

Part of the deck can be removed to reveal the interior and access the treasure chest below.

That creates a small discovery element and makes better use of the volume inside the hull.

It also gives children a reason to explore the ship rather than treating it only as a large exterior model.

The Sea Monster Adds Something Unexpected

One of my favorite additions is the poseable sea monster.

A pirate ship alone already gives builders plenty to work with, but the creature immediately creates another story: the crew is no longer only searching for treasure or battling rival pirates.

Now the ship can be attacked from below.

The movable tentacles make the monster easy to wrap around the hull or position next to the vessel, giving the main model a much more dramatic display option.

Five Minifigures Make the Ship Feel Populated

The set includes four pirates and a skeleton.

That is particularly useful for a Creator model because the figures make the ship feel like a complete scene straight from the box.

You can assign roles such as captain, crew members and treasure hunter without needing figures from another set.

The skeleton also adds a classic pirate-story ingredient, whether it represents a forgotten prisoner, a cursed sailor or someone who found the treasure a little too late.

The Buccaneer Castle Is a Genuine Alternative

The second build transforms the ship into a buccaneer castle.

This is where the 3-in-1 concept becomes particularly interesting because the model changes from a vehicle into a location.

The castle includes elements such as a tower, pier, palm tree, interior spaces and a hidden cave.

That creates a completely different style of pirate adventure. Instead of sailing across the ocean, the minifigures now have a base to defend and explore.

Why the Castle May Have Better Long-Term Play Value

The ship is more visually dramatic, but the castle may actually support a wider range of everyday stories.

Pirates can arrive at the pier, hide treasure in the cave, defend the tower or simply use the location as their home base.

A fixed location also combines easily with additional ships from other LEGO sets.

For children with an existing pirate collection, the castle may therefore be more useful than it first appears.

Two Smaller Ships Change the Game Again

The third build turns the pieces into two separate pirate ships.

For display, this option is probably less impressive than the huge main vessel.

For play, however, it has one obvious advantage: two ships can actually battle each other.

That makes this version especially suitable for two children playing together or for anyone who wants to create a naval chase without using another set.

Which of the Three Builds Is Best?

For display, I would choose the Iconic Pirate Ship.

It has the strongest silhouette, the most dramatic scale and the most immediately recognizable pirate aesthetic.

For building a larger pirate world, the buccaneer castle may be the most useful because it provides a permanent location.

For direct play and battles, the two smaller ships probably have the advantage.

That is a good sign because each alternative serves a different purpose rather than simply being an inferior version of the main model.

What I Like Most About LEGO 31387

The biggest strength is the amount of genuine variety.

The three builds are not simply three different sailing ships.

You get a large flagship, a pirate base and a pair of smaller vessels.

That means taking the main model apart should feel more rewarding than it does in Creator sets where the alternatives are closely related.

I also like the inclusion of the sea monster because it creates an immediate threat without requiring another large model.

Possible Downsides

The biggest drawback is almost inevitable with a set this ambitious: only one configuration can be built at a time.

The pirate ship and castle would look fantastic together, but you cannot create that scene from one copy of the set.

The same applies to the two smaller ships. Building them means dismantling the much more impressive flagship.

Some builders may also find it difficult to take apart a 1,074-piece ship after investing several hours in the main build.

That is the eternal Creator 3-in-1 dilemma: the alternative instructions are valuable only if you are actually willing to rebuild.

Is This a Play Set or a Display Set?

It is genuinely both.

The large ship has enough scale and visual detail to work as a permanent display model.

At the same time, the cannons, anchor, sails, sea monster, secret treasure and minifigures create far more interaction than you would get from a purely decorative ship.

That balance is one of the biggest strengths of 31387.

How Does It Compare With Adult LEGO Pirate Ships?

Large adult-focused LEGO ships usually prioritize historical styling, complex construction and shelf presence.

LEGO Creator 31387 takes a lighter approach.

It sacrifices some realism and architectural complexity in exchange for minifigures, play features and two complete rebuilds.

For an adult collector who wants maximum realism, a dedicated 18+ ship may be the better choice.

For someone who wants a pirate model that can still be played with and rebuilt, 31387 offers much more flexibility.

Classic LEGO Pirates Appeal

There is also a nostalgic element here.

The combination of a sailing ship, pirates, skeleton, treasure chest and tropical scenery brings back many of the ingredients that made classic LEGO Pirates so memorable.

The Creator format allows LEGO to revisit that atmosphere without needing a permanent dedicated Pirates theme.

For older fans who grew up with pirate sets, that may be one of the strongest emotional hooks.

Who Is LEGO 31387 Best For?

I think this set is particularly well suited to pirate fans who enjoy both building and imaginative play.

Children aged 9 and up get a substantial project with lots of interactive features, while older fans can appreciate the nostalgic theme and display potential.

It also makes sense for builders who genuinely use Creator 3-in-1 instructions rather than permanently assembling only the primary model.

If you never rebuild your LEGO sets, a dedicated single-model pirate ship may offer a more focused experience.

Is 1,074 Pieces Enough for a Large Pirate Ship?

Based on the official dimensions, LEGO has used the piece count efficiently.

The model reaches around 39 cm in length and 30 cm in height, giving it significant presence without requiring several thousand elements.

The trade-off is that some areas are naturally less dense and detailed than premium adult ships.

For a Creator 3-in-1 model aimed at builders aged 9+, though, the scale looks appropriate.

LEGO 31387 Size

The main Iconic Pirate Ship measures approximately 30 cm high, 39 cm long and 12 cm wide.

The narrow width is useful for display because the ship creates plenty of visual impact without consuming an enormous amount of shelf depth.

The masts provide most of the vertical presence, so checking shelf height will probably be more important than checking depth.

My Take on LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31387

Based on the official images and specifications, LEGO Creator 31387 looks like one of the stronger examples of the 3-in-1 concept.

The main pirate ship has enough scale and features to justify building it as a permanent model, while the castle and two-ship alternatives are different enough to make rebuilding genuinely interesting.

The sea monster, treasure compartment, minifigures and working ship features give younger builders plenty to do after construction.

The main weakness is also easy to identify. All three configurations belong in the same pirate world, so it is tempting to want the ship, castle and smaller vessels standing together.

One box cannot do that.

Still, as a single set that can move between a flagship, pirate stronghold and naval battle, 31387 packs an impressive amount of adventure into the same pile of bricks.

For me, the large ship is the model to display, while the alternative builds are the reason to eventually take it apart and start the adventure again from scratch.

What Do You Think?

Which version would you build first: the huge pirate ship, buccaneer castle or two smaller pirate ships?

And would you actually take the main ship apart to try the alternative builds, or would it stay permanently on your shelf?
