The new LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31386 Wild Animals: Majestic Lion is one of the more substantial animal-focused Creator sets, with 839 pieces and three very different safari builds hidden inside the same box.
The main model is an impressive male lion with a large brick-built mane, but the same pieces can also be rebuilt into a lioness or two lion cubs.
What makes this set particularly interesting is that LEGO has not simply changed the colors or proportions between the three options. Each build has a different personality and even comes with its own small savanna habitat scene.

What Makes LEGO 31386 Different?
Animal models are a natural fit for LEGO Creator 3-in-1 because the same collection of curved, jointed and decorative elements can be reused in completely different ways.
LEGO 31386 takes that idea further by keeping all three models within one animal family.
Instead of rebuilding the lion into an unrelated creature, the set explores the male lion, lioness and cubs separately.
That gives the entire set a strong safari identity while still making each rebuild feel meaningfully different.
The Majestic Lion Is Clearly the Main Attraction
The male lion is the largest and most visually dramatic version.
Its brick-built mane gives the model a strong silhouette and immediately separates it from the smoother lioness build.
At around 30 cm long, this is also large enough to feel like a proper display model rather than a small animal figure.
Based on the official images, the head and mane are the parts that give the lion most of its personality. They make the model recognizable even before you notice the smaller details.
Poseability Makes the Lion Much More Interesting
The lion is not locked into one position.
Its head, mouth and legs can be adjusted, allowing the animal to stand or lie down.
That is important for a LEGO animal model because a completely rigid creature can quickly start to feel more like a sculpture than an animal.
Here, the ability to reposition the body lets you create a calm resting lion, a standing display pose or a more alert expression with the mouth open.
The Lioness Offers a Cleaner Silhouette
The second build removes the large mane and transforms the same bricks into a lioness.
That makes the silhouette noticeably slimmer and more streamlined.
I like that this is not simply the male lion with a few pieces removed. The different proportions make the rebuild feel like a distinct animal model.
Like the lion, the lioness can be placed standing or lying down, so it retains much of the same display flexibility.
The Two Lion Cubs May Be the Most Creative Rebuild
The third option is arguably the biggest transformation because the 839 pieces become two separate lion cubs.
Instead of one large animal, builders get a pair of smaller models that can interact with each other.
The cubs have adjustable legs, ankles, wrists, ears, necks and tails, giving them a surprising amount of articulation.
That makes it easier to create playful poses, such as one cub sitting while the other appears to climb or explore.
Which of the Three Builds Is Best for Display?
For a permanent shelf display, I think the male lion is the strongest option.
The mane gives it the most dramatic appearance, while the 30 cm length gives the model enough presence to become a centerpiece.
The lioness is more understated and realistic, while the two cubs are more playful and create a scene rather than a single focal model.
So the best choice really depends on whether you want drama, elegance or personality.
The Savanna Side Builds Matter More Than They Look
Each animal option can be combined with a small habitat model featuring rocks and plants.
These builds are not huge, but they help give the animals some context.
A lion standing alone on a shelf can look slightly unfinished. Add a few rocks and plants and it immediately feels more like a miniature wildlife scene.
The habitat pieces also help differentiate the set from simpler LEGO animal models that are presented without any environment at all.
Why 839 Pieces Work Well for a Creator Animal
This is a much larger piece count than many small Creator animal sets.
That gives the designers enough bricks to create smoother body shapes, larger limbs and more detailed faces while still including the pieces needed for three different instructions.
The extra scale also improves poseability because joints can be integrated into larger structures without making the animals look overly mechanical.
What I Like Most About LEGO 31386
The biggest strength is the difference between the three experiences.
The male lion is a dramatic display model, the lioness offers a cleaner animal shape, and the cubs turn the set into a more playful two-character scene.
That is exactly what a Creator 3-in-1 set should do.
I also like that the alternative builds do not feel like obvious leftovers. Each one looks intentionally designed rather than simply being a smaller secondary model included to justify the 3-in-1 label.
Possible Downsides
The biggest limitation is the usual Creator 3-in-1 compromise: you cannot build the lion, lioness and cubs at the same time.
That may be particularly frustrating here because all three versions naturally belong together.
A display containing the male lion, lioness and two cubs would create a fantastic pride scene, but achieving that would require additional copies of the set.
The models are also stylized LEGO interpretations rather than highly realistic sculptures, so builders looking for anatomical accuracy may prefer a different kind of animal model.
Would It Be Better If All Four Lions Could Be Built Together?
From a display perspective, absolutely.
A complete lion family would create a much more impressive savanna scene.
But that would also require a dramatically larger piece count and almost certainly a higher price.
The 3-in-1 format gives LEGO another advantage: the same bricks provide three different building experiences rather than being locked into one large final model.
For builders who genuinely enjoy rebuilding, that trade-off makes sense.
Play Value
The articulation makes 31386 much more playable than a static wildlife sculpture.
The lion and lioness can be repositioned for different safari stories, while the two cubs provide more opportunities for interaction.
The habitat builds also give children locations for the animals rather than forcing all the action to happen on an empty table.
For younger builders, I think the cubs are likely to offer the most imaginative play because two characters naturally create more interaction than one.
Display Value
The main lion is where the display value really shines.
Its long body, large mane and natural color palette should make it easy to display in a bedroom, office or LEGO collection without looking overly toy-like.
The small savanna environment also gives the finished model a more complete presentation.
Unlike a vehicle, the lion does not need a road, garage or other model around it to make sense on a shelf.
Play vs Display: Which Side Wins?
I think LEGO 31386 balances both unusually well.
The poseability, rebuilding and cub option create strong play value, while the size and detailed main lion make the set equally suitable for display.
If I had to choose, I would place the main lion slightly more on the display side, while the cubs lean more strongly toward play.
That difference between the builds is another reason the 3-in-1 format works so well here.
Who Is LEGO 31386 Best For?
This set should appeal especially to animal lovers, safari fans and builders who genuinely enjoy rebuilding their LEGO models.
It also looks like a good option for children who have moved beyond small animal sets but are not yet looking for extremely complex adult display models.
The 839-piece count provides a substantial building project without pushing the set into enormous collector-model territory.
Fans who always keep their LEGO sets permanently assembled may get less value from the alternative instructions unless they are willing to rebuild occasionally.
How Does It Compare With Smaller LEGO Creator Animals?
The biggest advantage is scale.
Smaller Creator animals can be charming, but they often need to simplify body shapes, joints and facial details.
With 839 pieces, 31386 has enough room for more sophisticated shaping and a larger number of articulation points.
That should make the finished animal feel much more substantial on display.
Is It a Good Set for Animal Collectors?
Yes, particularly if your collection includes other brick-built wildlife models.
A large lion has an instantly recognizable silhouette and fits naturally beside other safari animals.
The neutral natural colors should also make it relatively easy to combine with other wildlife scenes without creating a visual clash.
LEGO 31386 Size
The largest animal build measures approximately 16 cm high, 30 cm long and 8 cm wide.
The 30 cm length gives the model considerably more presence than a typical small Creator animal while still keeping the footprint manageable for a shelf.
My Take on LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31386
Based on the official images and specifications, LEGO Creator 31386 looks like a strong example of what the 3-in-1 format can do when the alternative builds are treated seriously.
The majestic male lion is the obvious centerpiece, but the lioness and two cubs are different enough that I would actually want to rebuild the set rather than ignore the secondary instructions.
The articulation is another major strength because it prevents the animals from feeling frozen in one display pose.
The main downside is almost ironic: the three builds belong together so naturally that it is easy to wish they could all be displayed at once.
Still, as a single box containing three very different safari building experiences, 31386 offers much more variety than a standard one-model animal set.
For me, the combination of size, articulation and genuinely useful alternative builds is what makes this set interesting.

What Do You Think?
Which version would you build first: the majestic lion, lioness or two lion cubs?
And would you rather keep the main lion permanently on display, or regularly rebuild the set to try all three versions?
